Question 1

What is strategic planning in simple terms?

Accepted Answer

Strategic planning is the process where an organisation's leaders get honest about where they are, decide where they genuinely want to go, and build a clear roadmap for getting there. It's not a list of goals or a budget, it's a leadership discipline that aligns your entire organisation around a shared direction, usually over a three-to-five year horizon.

Question 2

What are the key steps in the strategic planning process?

Accepted Answer

The core phases are: (1) audit your current position honestly using tools like SWOT and PESTEL, (2) set a bold "Outrageous Massive Goal" that forces new thinking, (3) identify three to five strategic pillars (the Big Rocks that make the goal possible), (4) map those pillars to quarterly OKRs with clear owners and deadlines, and (5) establish a monthly Strategy Pulse to review, learn, and adapt continuously.

Question 3

What is the difference between strategic planning and operational planning?

Accepted Answer

A strategic plan defines your long-term destination; where you're going and why. An operational plan describes how you'll get there day to day, quarter to quarter. Strategic planning is done by senior leadership at a high level; operational planning is carried out by department managers in specific, actionable steps. Both are necessary, and both fail without the other.

Question 4

What is the difference between a goal and a strategy?

Accepted Answer

A goal is a destination (the what.) A strategy is the specific path, set of choices, and resource allocation you select to get there, the how and the why. Many leaders set ambitious goals without ever building a genuine strategy, which is why so many goals go unmet.

Question 5

Why do most strategic plans fail?

Accepted Answer

They almost never fail because the strategy was wrong. They fail because the right direction never reached the people doing the work. The most common culprits are poor communication, lack of real leadership accountability, misaligned teams, no execution layer connecting strategy to daily behaviour, and the "set it and forget it" mentality that lets plans collect dust after January.

Question 6

How often should we update our strategic plan?

Accepted Answer

Your OMG and core strategic direction, should remain stable for three to five years. But your tactical roadmap should be reviewed monthly and updated quarterly. The biggest planning mistake isn't setting a bad strategy; it's treating the strategy as fixed in a world that keeps moving.

Question 7

Who should be involved in the strategic planning process?

Accepted Answer

Start with the executive team for the vision and strategic pillars. Then bring in mid-level managers for the tactical mapping phase; they know where the operational realities will create friction, and their buy-in is what makes execution possible. Strategy built entirely in the boardroom rarely survives contact with the ground floor.

Question 8

How does leadership coaching support strategic planning?

Accepted Answer

Coaching develops the strategic thinking, self-awareness, and communication skills that planning frameworks cannot build on their own. A coach helps leaders surface blind spots, make better decisions under pressure, and build the accountability discipline needed to turn strategy from a document into a lived organisational reality.
